Ben Brooks' Review Of The Verge: 9.4782829183
I hate to sound like I’m incessantly ripping on The Verge — though, admittedly, I am — but Ben Brooks nails this.
Brooks’ takedowns of the two reviews hit cites are also dead-on. The Sphero is apparently good, okay, shitty. And the Galaxy Nexus 4G is awesome — except for the 4G part which makes it almost unusable. You know, the key feature of the device. Still, 8.7! Would it be a 13/10 if the 4G was rock solid?
I’ve always hated the majority of rating systems in general. I hate 1 to 5 stars because while 1, 3, and 5 make sense (bad, okay, and good), what constitutes 2 and 4 stars? The Verge takes it a step farther with 1 to 10 — complete with decimal points! 8.7… what the fuck does that mean?
And what will it mean in 6 months when there’s inevitably a better Android phone on the market? Will they change the review then? Or will the better one be an 8.8? If so, what happens in 20 years? Will the best Android phone be a 132 out of 10?
Personally, I’d give the Galaxy Nexus a 7.13482, but that’s just me.
Okay, now I’m just being an asshole. But it just seems to me that they’re whole review mentality flies in the face of some silly objectivity they’re trying to convey. 8.7 ratings are clearly not obtained by the scientific method — they’re based largely on subjective viewpoints.
All I have to say is thank god for Brian Lam’s The Wirecutter. Best laptop ever created? The 13-inch MacBook Air.
Errrr no! The review scores are based on the device they have as a review unit and at that specific time of the device release. Come on! Get real. If you didn’t know that where have you been?!
On the Galaxy Nexus review, it’s a score based on more than just the LTE factor. It’s design, software, hardware! It’s an all round review of a device, not view based on one aspect of a device. If that aspect of the device is a problem The Verge mentions it and if you listen to The Vergecast I have no doubt you will have gathered that LTE is a problem.
The quoting of this article is all coming from MG Siegler’s annoyance that Topolsky defeated his argument with the Horseshit forum post and Topolsky has had the maturity and brains to leave it there.
After listening to Topolsky talk about the post and his opinions in the latest Vergecast, I sit in full agreement with him. Although he didn’t want to compare this Android v iOS argument to politics, I’m going to. Obviously politics changes more in the world, but the bold-faced ignorance of only supporting one viewpoint no matter what is the same. I’ve worked in politics and during my time there I learnt that the hardest thing to do was to step back and acknowledge your enemies strengths. MG Siegler can’t seem to do that on any level and he’s now jumped to the next step of mud slinging - something that is rife in politics and frankly shouldn’t happen. It’s just a piece of tech! There are bigger things in life! Android is a competitor to Apple. MG you are allowed to not like Android, but at least have the maturity to acknowledge its strengths.
The Verge is a new site and by far the best designed tech site on the web. That’s right the site is NEW and is being updated with new features all the time. They have even said recently that they are considering each writer having personal blogs on the site. That’s where the features and opinions will come from.
To be controversial is fine to get hits, but to be bigger than that you need something more.
Just sayin’
