About

2012 is here…
My first post of 2012. I prefer 2012 already. There’s a better symmetry in the numbers for 2 0 1 2.
Now what will 2012 bring? I can’t predict the future. Damn. If only I had learnt that skill already. I possibly need mad spiked white hair and a DeLorean to acquire that particular skill.
Social media seemed to hit new levels in 2011. It felt like the world outside of social media geeks like myself were starting to realise what we had been banging on about all this time actually held some truth. I can only see that continuing in 2012.
Facebook. They still has plenty up their sleeve. Something big will hit us in 2012. The Timeline feels like the beginning of something much bigger to me. I think Facebook’s design may alter more significantly at some point in 2012. Facebook’s design feels like it’s dropping behind. It’s become ugly with time. It needs updating. Functionally it works. Improvements are needed to the user experience.
Twitter. 2011 was the year of the hashtag. 2012 will be the year of the Twitter handle. Hashtags allow for people to interact alone about a subject. Brands what you to interact with them. It takes a lot of effort to get a hashtag and Twitter handle to be associated in a Twitter feed. Twitter handles will therefore take priority for brands.
Gadgets. The year will be dominated by the iPad 3. If it comes to the forefront and adds in significant changes to screen resolution and better software rather than just an increased phone OS, it will dominate forever. It will become the iPod. Android has to make some serious tablet moves to keep up, never mind get ahead.
Web video. This is going to become of more significance in 2012. I have a post in my drafts about the way video is changing which I will post soon. I also got Final Cut Pro for Christmas and have just bought a new camera which means there will be a few videos from me for the first time outside of work in well over a year and a half. It also means that I will be taking an even more active look at creative web video. More coming on this…
I’m looking forward to everything to come in 2012. The speed of the industry at the moment means changes and steps forward in our thinking about social media and technology will surely take place. It’s an exciting time to be around on this planet!
(By the way - got to love the Top Gear calendar!).
