About

CES 2012
I’ve only managed to skim over coverage of CES this year and have been catching up thanks to The VergeCast’s daily shows (well I’ve still got two to watch). This year the overwhelming focus has been on smart TV’s and ultrabooks, neither of which interest me greatly. I’m a geek ahead of the curve it would seem. Laptops are great for work, but that’s the only time I use them. I have a powerful desktop PC with huge screen and a tablet. That’s all I need.
Smart TV’s are a little more interesting… but they have yet to have been done well by any manufacturer. I personally can’t see the need for a smart TV yet. I use my PC to watch everything I want to watch. I can watch the majority of the TV I want to see on demand, or streamed live so I have no need for a smart TV. If I want to tweet during a TV show I will use my tablet or phone, I won’t use the TV. I can see what manufacturers are thinking. A computer will become the centre piece of most living rooms over a standard TV, and yet I would rather hook a Mac Mini up to a screen and watch TV that way. It works as far as I need for a media centre. I’m yet to be convinced by smart TV’s… Apple might change that though…. who knows?
